The show facility is a
fabulous exhibition hall connected to a first class hotel.
This is one of the finest show
facilities in the country. Unfortunately, as
of March the hotel is
sold out, but there are rooms in overflow hotels
available here.
This year marks the Centennial
of the Doberman Pinscher. There are plans to celebrate
this event at our National that are just too numerous to show
here.

The Doberman Pinscher Club of
America welcomes you to the ultimate learning experience for judges of the
Doberman Pinscher. We believe we offer unique ways to teach future judges
of our breed the essential elements to lead to successfully judging this
important breed.
Our training method
combines the use of knowledgeable individuals from the
Doberman community, a varied presentation format, and dogs of varying
quality from average to excellent.
Students will be provided and
Illustrated Standard, a National Catalog, and a series of handouts.
We begin with a history presented by
Katherine Stead for Cherie Holmes followed by an overview of the
Doberman Pinscher by Bob Vandiver.
Following the history and overview, we will
have an in-depth presentation of the Doberman as a working dog presented
by Nancy Christensen.
The students are then divided into three study groups
that discuss the major physical components of the breed (structure, head, and
movement). Each study group presentation is in a separate
room. Students follow their designated group leader through the stations sequentially.
This format allows for smaller groups to interact with their group leader and
the presenter, and offers an informal learning atmosphere. The smaller
groups also allow the attendees to be close to the presenters and the
graphics and live dogs that are used in their presentations. Each
study group is about 30 minutes in duration and each presenter uses his/her own
presentation tools (graphics, live dogs, etc.) to make each study group
unique.
The study groups are followed by a
review, we call our "take-away" message; a summary of important
characteristics by which to evaluate the Doberman in the ring. A panel
and Q&A session is offered, after which we will convene at ringside where bitch judging
may still be in progress.
Early Saturday morning we will reconvene for the hands-on
portion of the seminar. The hands-on session will be led by Judy Brown, a well-respected breeder judge,
with the assistance of other well-respected Doberman breeder-judges.
Judy Brown will discuss ways to examine a Doberman and
issues important to judging the breed.
There will be several dogs of varying quality available for
judging. The students will have the opportunity to enter the ring to judge
the dogs for themselves. They will examine each dog and
observe movement. They will place the dogs. Afterward the students
will have an opportunity to state their placements and the reasons for the
choices. The three breeder judges will tell the
group how they placed the dogs and describe why they placed them in the order
they did. The student can then compare his/her placements to
see how they compare with the experts' evaluation of the dogs.
Our hands-on session meets all AKC requirements as a
workshop, and counts as an enriching component for the application.
Following the hands-on experience, the students will meet
ringside in a reserved area with DPCA approved mentors for ringside mentoring of
the Intersex Class judging. This activity is organized by breeder-judge
Jan Van Wormer. This is a rare opportunity to see about 150
champions, including most of the best representatives of the breed. There
will be closed circuit TV to allow the students to see down and back movement.
DPCA approved mentors will be available and will be rotated periodically so that
each student is exposed to different mentors.
The DPCA is convinced that this seminar is the best learning
experience available for the breed. The knowledge of the presenters and
the quality of the dogs for hands-on evaluation and for ringside mentoring are unparalleled anywhere else during the year. We hope that you seriously
consider the Friday afternoon and Saturday morning times convenient and a
worthwhile investment in your judging future.
